Many come to Tours for its proximity to the grand châteaux of the Loire Valley. They can be easily reached from the city, and there are guided sightseeing excursions available from the town. However, the city of Tours itself is packed with restaurants, shops and historical monuments that are well worth a look. Known to the Romans as "Turones", Tours holds a special significance in French history, in that it was the seat of the kings of France, from Charles VII to François I in the 15th and 16th centuries. You can step back to the time of the French kings by visiting the old quarter around Place Plumerau. Here, tall, narrow medieval houses surround the square, and sidewalk cafés set up their umbrellas in view of the old, timber-framed buildings.
The Loire River runs through the city, and it can be a refreshing break just to stop and sit on a bench overlooking the water. There are also a number of city parks on offer. Head to le square François Sicard or the Jardin des Prébendes for a stroll.

The city has a number of museums where you can easily pass a few days. For wine lovers, don't miss the Musée des Vins de Touraine for a comprehensive history of winemakers in the region, along with insights into wine production. At the Château Royal de Tours, the former residence of the kinds of France, you can visit the Atelier Histoire de Tours, which exhibits the history of the city. The city's fine arts museum is housed in the former Archbishop's Palace, and holds paintings by several of the great masters, including Rembrandt, Degas and Rubens.
Tours has many local specialties, including rillettes (paté) and macaroons. To sample the city's gastronomy, walk down the narrow rue Colbert, where you will find many a restaurant among small courtyards and fountains. For shopping, head to the upscale boutiques along the rue Nationale, or the tiny shops behind the fountains of the Place Jean Jaurès.
Tours has a huge amount of outdoor markets that are open in the mornings, all year round. Markets range from a marché gourmand, to an antiques market and a flower market, and number 30 in total. There are specialty fairs, as well, including a Christmas market, and one dedicated to garlic and basil.
