Dijon

In December 1513, the citizens of Dijon found themselves inundated with 30,000 German and Swiss soldiers, attempting to take over the city. Outnumbered, and at a loss, the Dijonnais representatives emerged from the city laden with casks of wine. The would-be invaders drank the wine, and decided to reconsider their plans, leaving the Burgundians in peace. The tradition of wine-fuelled hospitality continues today, and Dijon is renown throughout France for boeuf bourguignon, red wine, and of course, mustard.

Dijon travel

Wine production is a major attraction for visitors to the Burgundy region, where Dijon is the capital city. An excellent itinerary for a visit to the region is to arrive in Dijon, hire bicycles, and take the Route Touristique des Grands Crus du Bourgogne (Tourist Route of the Grands Crus of Burgundy). The self-guided tour takes you along a well-travelled route from Dijon to Santenay, passing through 37 winemaking villages along the way. There is a calendar of events throughout the year, including village festivals and informative talks.

The largest city in Burgundy, Dijon is an important industrial centre and has transport links to most major cities in the country. It is a well-rounded city, with a large student population, that offers excellent cuisine, good nightlife and a number of cultural attractions, such as museums and civic buildings.

Visit the Ancient Palais des Ducs de Bourgogne for the city's fine arts museum, which is housed in the east wing of the palace, or the city hall, which is in the east wing. Downstairs, you can visit the restored 15th-century kitchen, and upstairs don't miss the collection of Cubist works by Braque and Picasso.

Outdoor activities abound in Dijon, and the city boasts a number of gardens and parks. Explore the marina area and the Port du Canal, with the Winged Dream sculpture, commemorating Dijon's native son, Gustave Eiffel. Follow the path along the canal to lake Kir, when you can hire a canoe or boat, for a lovely day out.

When looking to fill your suitcase with wine, take a trip to nearby Beaune, which is known as the true wine capital of Burgundy, with its wine museum, wine classes and many opportunities for tastings.
