France hotels

The city of Clermont-Ferrand is located in the Auvergne region, and lies in the shadow of several dormant volcanoes, high in the surrounding mountains. Originally two separate cities, Clermont and Montferrand, the two were joined in 1603 by Kind Louis XIII. One of France's oldest cities, the area was known the ancient Greeks.

Clermont-Ferrand travel

There are some beautiful sites and monuments in the city, and most can be reached on foot. Start in the wide, modern, place Jaude for restaurants, shops and the opera house. From the place, you can easily walk to the city's cathedral. Constructed with local Volvic volcanic rock, la cathédrale Notre-Dame de l'Assomption, built in the 13th century, has twin spires and stained glass in the Gothic fashion. A centrepiece of the city's sites and monuments, the cathedral is open to explore, and you can climb the Bayette tower for a beautiful view. From the cathedral, stroll down the rue des Gras, with its small local specialty shops and boutiques. Be sure to visit the Fiontfreyde house, commonly known as the Architects' house owing to the many restorations it has undergone since it was built in 1578. It's now home to the Ranquet museum, dedicated to promoting Auvergne culture.

The city is chock full of local gourmet specialties and markets. Organic produce can be found under the metal roof of the marché Saint-Joseph, and specialty meats are available at the artisan butchers of the large marché Saint-Pierre or on the rue de la Boucherie. For antique glass and books, check out the pedestrianised rue du Port or the rue Pascal.

Nature is in abundance in Clermont-Ferrand. In the city itself, you can visit a number of parks and gardens, including the botanical garden on rue de la Charme and the large green spaces and sculptures of the Jardin Lecoq. But for unparalleled splendour, visit the Parc des Volcans d'Auvergne. This extensive nature reserve is actually comprised of three sections, and offers walking trails that take you through valleys, up high plateaus and past large, volcanic craters.
